Rate Pulse for independent car hire companies

For independent car hire firms without a pricing team. See the market, your gap to it and the dates that move demand, free.

Independent car hire firms usually price by feel. There's no revenue manager, rates get set once a season, and someone checks a booking site when bookings go quiet. Rate Pulse gives you the market for free: what every brand at your airport charges, by car type and pick-up day, how they rate with customers, and what's on locally in the next 14 days.

What you're up against

  • No time. Checking 14 pick-up days for every brand by hand takes a morning, so it doesn't happen.
  • Bigger brands set the tone. The international brands in the terminal price above you. Shuttle brands price below. You're not sure which side you should sit.
  • Events sneak up. You find out about a big weekend when the phone rings, and you've already sold cars at the normal rate.

The views that help

Benchmark your rates if you list on rentalcars.com. Pick your brand and car type. You see your gap to the market for each pick-up day and which competitors undercut you most often.

Market rates by pick-up day if you don't. Read the typical rate for your car type and compare it with your own.

Every brand, ranked by customers to see where your ratings stand, part by part.

Dates to watch for the events and holidays in the next two weeks.

A worked example

Say you run 30 cars from a depot near Christchurch Airport with a shuttle. Your compact rate is NZ$150 a day, all November.

In the Rate Pulse sweep of 7 Nov 2026, the typical compact rate at Christchurch was NZ$192. The cheapest pick-up day was Sun 8 Nov at NZ$159. The dearest was Wed 18 Nov at NZ$206.

So you were 22% under the market typical. Even on the market's cheapest day you were NZ$9 under.

Some of that gap is fair. You're a shuttle ride away, and terminal desks charge for the convenience. But the market's cheapest day is still above your everyday rate.

A sensible move: lift to NZ$165 for the days where the market sits above NZ$190, and keep NZ$150 for the quieter ones. On a 3-day hire, NZ$15 a day is NZ$45 a booking. Across 30 cars in a busy fortnight, that adds up fast.

Then check Dates to watch. Cup and Show Week ran 10 to 14 Nov. The typical economy rate jumped from NZ$139 for an 11 Nov pick-up to NZ$203 for 12 Nov. If you'd known, you'd have held your economy cars back for it.

That's one 14-day snapshot in November, so check it again before you change anything. It refreshes daily.
