Point-of-sale pricing

Point-of-sale pricing means setting different rates by where the customer books from. How it works, the currency maths, and how to check what shoppers see.

Point-of-sale pricing is charging different rates depending on where the customer books from: their country, currency or the website they use. The car and dates are the same. The price shown to a shopper in Germany can differ from the price shown to one in New Zealand.

How it works

Operators and brokers can load separate rates per source market, or one rate converted into the shopper's currency. Either way:

Price in shopper's currency = your rate × exchange rate (+ any market-specific markup)

Exchange rates move, so a fixed price in one currency drifts in another.

Worked example

The exchange rate here is real. On 6 Nov 2026, NZ$1 bought about €0.4965 (ECB rate via Frankfurter, as used in Rate Pulse).

Hypothetical. Say you price a compact at NZ$120 a day. A European shopper sees about €60. If the euro strengthens 5% against the New Zealand dollar, that same NZ$120 shows as about €57, a little cheaper to them for no change on your side.

If you load a separate euro rate of €65 instead, you're earning about NZ$131 a day from European bookings, 9% more than from domestic ones.

Why it matters for a rental operator

International visitors may compare you against prices in their own currency and from their own country. If your rate shop only searches from home, you might not be seeing what they see.

Point-of-sale rates also let you price for each market's willingness to pay. Do it carefully and keep it consistent, or customers comparing notes will notice.

See it in Rate Pulse

Rate Pulse searches rentalcars.com from New Zealand, so prices are what a New Zealand-based shopper sees. They're stored in NZD and shown in the airport's currency by default, switchable to 13 currencies. Start at Rate Pulse.
