Event demand surge

An event demand surge is extra rental demand around a big event. How to measure it, why some events barely move car hire, and real Lisbon numbers.

An event demand surge is the extra rental demand around a concert, sports match, conference or festival. It shows up as more bookings, higher market rates, or both, on the days people arrive.

Formula

Event uplift = typical rate on event pick-up days ÷ typical rate on comparable non-event days − 1

Comparable means the same weekday in nearby weeks, without other holidays. Measure your own bookings the same way: bookings for event days against the same weekday a week either side.

Worked example

Real numbers, and a useful surprise. Web Summit ran in Lisbon from 9 to 12 Nov 2026. In the Rate Pulse sweep of 7 Nov 2026, the typical compact at Lisbon airport stayed between NZ$25 and NZ$27 a day (about €12 to €13, converted) across all 14 pick-up days, event days included. See the Lisbon page.

Uplift: roughly zero. A likely reason is that a city-centre conference crowd doesn't need a car. One snapshot, so this shows that this event didn't move the market that fortnight, not that conferences never do.

Hypothetical counter-example. A regional festival two hours from the airport, with poor public transport, could push your bookings for the arrival day 40% above the same weekday a week earlier. That's the kind worth pricing up.

Why it matters for a rental operator

Events are easy to guess wrong. Some draw people who need cars: regional sport, rural shows, festivals outside town. Others don't: city conferences, stadium matches with good transit.

Score each event on whether visitors need to drive, and check what the market did last time before you lift rates.

See it in Rate Pulse

Dates to watch on each airport page lists confirmed events in the next 14 days, each with a source. Put it next to the market rates chart to see whether rates moved. Start at Rate Pulse.
