School holiday demand

School holiday demand is the lift in family rentals when schools close. How to measure it, which car types it hits, and where to find the dates.

School holiday demand is the extra rental demand when schools close and families travel. It hits larger cars hardest: SUVs, people carriers and wagons. It often lengthens hires too.

Formula

Holiday uplift = bookings per day in the holiday ÷ bookings per day in the same weeks outside it − 1

Measure it by category. Holidays can lift people carriers a lot more than economy cars.

Watch the origin markets too. A school holiday in another country can fill your fleet if that's where your visitors come from.

Worked example

Hypothetical. Say you run 8 seven-seat people carriers. Over the two term-time weeks before a school holiday they averaged 4 on hire a day. Over the holiday fortnight they averaged 7.5.

  • Uplift = 7.5 ÷ 4 − 1 = 88%
  • Utilisation went from 50% to 94%

At 94% you were nearly sold out, which usually means you priced too low. Next year, lift people-carrier rates before the holiday booking window opens, and set a minimum rental length if hires are mostly a week.

Why it matters for a rental operator

School holidays are among the most predictable demand peaks you'll get. The dates are published months ahead. Not pricing for them is money left behind every year.

Regional dates differ, so check every region and country your customers come from.

See it in Rate Pulse

Dates to watch on each airport page lists public and school holidays in the next 14 days, by region, with a source. In the sweep of 7 Nov 2026, Bavaria had a one-day school holiday on 18 Nov. See the Munich page. For the full year, see our NZ and Europe holiday lists.
