NZ public holidays and school holidays 2026 to 2027: a planning guide for tour and shuttle operators
Every national holiday, anniversary day and school term date for 2026 and 2027 in one place, with what each one means for drivers, vans and demand.
By the DayRunner team ·
This page lists every New Zealand public holiday, regional anniversary day and school term for 2026 and 2027, taken from Employment New Zealand and the Ministry of Education. For tour and shuttle operators, these dates set the busy days, the days your drivers cost more, and the long weekends when domestic travellers fill your seats. Planning notes follow the tables.
We checked the dates on 20 October 2026. Employment New Zealand notes its list may contain errors and suggests checking anniversary days with your local council. Links are in Sources at the end.

What the dates mean for operators
Demand peaks
Long weekends. Waitangi, Easter, Anzac (when it lands on a Monday), King's Birthday, Matariki and Labour Day all make three or four-day weekends. Expect more domestic bookings, more late bookings, and more families.
School holidays. The July and spring breaks fill ski shuttles and family day trips. In 2027 Easter is early (late March), so it won't overlap the April school holidays the way it did in 2026.
Matariki moves. It's 10 July in 2026, inside the winter school holidays. In 2027 it's 25 June, a week before they start, which gives you two separate peaks instead of one.
Anniversary days are local. Auckland Anniversary weekend is busy in Northland and Coromandel. Otago's is in late March, right in Queenstown's autumn season. A national calendar won't show these.
Staffing and pay
Drivers who work a public holiday get at least time and a half, and a day in lieu if it's a day they'd normally work. Budget for it when you price holiday departures.
Ask for holiday availability early. People book their own long weekends months out.
Check which version of a Mondayised holiday applies to each driver. It depends on whether they normally work that weekend day.
Long days and work time
Holiday peaks are when long days creep in: an extra pickup, a later return, a driver who did a late run the night before. The NZ work time rules still apply. A 30-minute break after 5½ hours of work, no more than 13 hours in a work day, and 10 hours' continuous rest after it. Our work time rules guide covers the detail.
Plan the day around it
On a peak day, the fix is in tomorrow's plan, not on the road. Plan the day shows how DayRunner allocates drivers and vans across every run, and work-time rules shows how it flags a driver who'd go over 13 hours or start without 10 hours' rest.
Questions
When are the NZ school holidays in 2027?
Per the Ministry of Education: 10 to 26 April, 3 to 18 July and 25 September to 10 October 2027, plus the summer break after term 4 ends (no later than 17 December). Term 1 starts between 28 January and 3 February, depending on the school.
What does 'Saturday 25 April or Monday 27 April' mean?
When Anzac Day, Waitangi Day, Christmas, Boxing Day or the New Year holidays fall on a weekend, the holiday moves to the Monday (or Tuesday) for anyone who wouldn't normally work that weekend day. For anyone who would, it stays on the weekend. This is often called Mondayisation.
Do I have to pay drivers extra on a public holiday?
Employment New Zealand says an employee who works on a public holiday gets at least time and a half, and an alternative holiday (a day in lieu) if the holiday falls on a day they'd normally work. Check their public holidays guidance for your situation.
Which anniversary day applies to my business?
The one for the province your staff work in. Anniversary days follow the old provincial districts, not regions or councils, so check the Employment New Zealand list, or your local council, if you're near a boundary.
