Should a small operator list with brokers at all?
Usually yes, for reach, especially for overseas visitors who search on a broker first. Price the broker channel on its net, after commission, and keep it in proportion to your direct bookings.

How to price for car hire brokers, work out your real net per day, and decide what each channel is worth. With a channel template and real airport data.

Treat each broker as a sales channel with its own net rate, not as a second shop window for your direct price. Work out what you keep per day after commission, cancellations and extras, then decide how much of your fleet that channel deserves on each date. A broker booking at a good net on a quiet Tuesday is a win. The same booking in school holidays may be costing you a direct customer.
A car hire broker sells your cars alongside every competitor's. The customer sees a ranked list, usually sorted by price or a mix of price and rating.
That list is also your market. Rate Pulse is built from public search results on rentalcars.com, one of the large brokers. At Auckland the sweep for 8 to 21 Nov 2026 found 4,461 offers from 19 brands. At Christchurch it found 1,837 offers from 18 brands, and at Queenstown 1,813 from 18. Every one of those brands is competing for the same click.
Some groups list more than one brand at the same airport, so they show up twice on the page. Europcar and Keddy By Europcar, for example, appear as separate brands at Auckland, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Brisbane in the sweep.
Customers compare more than the headline price. In the sweep, most offers came with free cancellation. At Auckland every brand offered it on at least 93% of its offers. Unlimited kilometres was standard on every Auckland brand.
That means terms are table stakes on the broker page. If your offer lacks free cancellation when everyone else has it, you look worse even at the same price. The free cancellation, mileage and automatic share research has the numbers by airport.
The other thing on the page is your supplier rating. See how to improve car hire review scores for what moves it.
For each broker, write down the commission or margin from your contract, any payment or cancellation terms, and whether extras sold on the broker reach you.
Use the template below to get net revenue per hire day by channel.

Decide which dates and car types the broker gets, and when you stop-sell there to keep cars for direct.

These numbers are hypothetical. Use your own contract terms.
Say you run 40 cars at Christchurch. Your compact rate is $180 a day on your own website. A broker takes a 20% commission on the rate it sells.
| Line | Direct | Broker |
|---|---|---|
| Rate per day shown to customer | $180 | $180 |
| Commission (20%) | $0 | $36 |
| Your cost to win the booking (ads, card fees) | $14 | $3 |
| Extras sold per day (insurance, gear) | $22 | $8 |
| Net per hire day | $188 | $149 |
The broker day is worth $39 less. That's fine when the car would otherwise sit idle. It's a loss when a direct customer would have taken that car on that date.
Now check the market. In the Rate Pulse sweep the typical (median) compact at Christchurch was $192 a day, ranging from $159 to $206 by pick-up day. At $180 you're under the market on most days. On the dearest days, you're about 13% under. You could likely hold $190 on those dates without falling far down the page.
Fill one row per channel, per car type. Update it monthly from your booking system.

Net per hire day after cancellations is: net rate plus extras, times (1 minus cancellation %). It's rough, but it puts every channel on the same scale.
Some broker contracts ask for rate parity with your website. Read yours. Even with parity, the price a customer sees can differ by country and currency. That's point-of-sale pricing, and it's why Rate Pulse says which point of sale it searches from: New Zealand.
The rate the customer sees on the broker may be the base rate or an all-inclusive one. Compare like with like before you decide you're too dear.
Price the broker on its net. Compare it with what direct earns on the same date. Close it when you can sell the car for more yourself. Then check where you sit on the broker page every week, because that page is where most of your competitors are pricing against you.

The amount you receive per day after the broker's commission or margin. If you load a rate the broker marks up, the rate you load is your net. See net rates and commission.
Not always. Brokers can show different prices by where the customer searches from and what's bundled. Rate Pulse searches rentalcars.com from New Zealand, so it shows one point of sale.
