Is free cancellation a selling point for car hire?
Not much of one at these airports. Between 93% and 98% of offers had it everywhere in this sweep, so nearly every competitor had it too.

How common free cancellation, unlimited kilometres and automatic cars were at 18 airports, and whether brands that offer more of them charge more.
By the DayRunner team ·
Free cancellation was close to universal: 93% to 98% of car hire offers had it at every one of 18 airports. Unlimited kilometres and automatic gearboxes were not. Unlimited km ran from 59% of offers at Barcelona to 100% at all three New Zealand airports. Automatics ran from 46% at Athens to 100% in Australia, Bangkok and Bali.

Bali had 152 offers from 3 brands, so its row rests on very little.
Of the 258 brands with 10 or more offers, the number with a share of 99% or more:
| Term | Brands at 99%+ | Share of brands |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited km | 196 | 76% |
| Automatic | 111 | 43% |
| Free cancellation | 39 | 15% |
Free cancellation is common on offers but rarely on every offer a brand lists. Most brands, 207 of 258, had it on 90% to 98% of their offers. The median brand was at 93%.
No brand at any of the 10 European airports had automatics on 99% or more of its offers. In New Zealand and Australia most brands did.
Barely, in this sweep. Across the brands with 10 or more offers and a price index, the rank correlations with price index were:
| Term | Rank correlation with price index |
|---|---|
| Free cancellation share | 0.10 |
| Unlimited km share | 0.07 |
| Automatic share | 0.13 |
All three are close to zero. A brand's mix of these terms told us very little about where it priced against the market. Price index is the brand's median daily rate ÷ the market median for the same car type and day, so it already compares like with like on car type.
Unlimited km splits Europe. Athens, Dublin, Rome and Lisbon were at 99% to 100%. Barcelona, London, Madrid and Munich were at 59% to 66%.
Automatics split the world. New Zealand, Australia, Bangkok and Bali were at 98% to 100%. All 10 European airports were between 46% and 74%.
Free cancellation hardly varied at all. The lowest airport and the highest were 5 points apart.
Not much of one at these airports. Between 93% and 98% of offers had it everywhere in this sweep, so nearly every competitor had it too.
In Europe. Automatics were 46% of offers at Athens, 50% at Dublin and 51% at Lisbon. In New Zealand, Australia, Bangkok and Bali they were 98% or more.
Not in a way this data can see. The rank correlation between a brand's unlimited km share and its price index was 0.07, close to no link.
